Last year was a washout due to Hurricane Irene, but this weekend’s forecast predict’s cloudy skies and a few showers. Needless to say…AFROPUNK FEST IS ON!! This two-day music festival will feature appearances by Gym Class Heroes, Das Racist, Toro Y Moi and headlining artists Erykah Badu on Saturday and Janelle Monae on Sunday. Just a warning. This isn’t your commercial Top 40, Hip-Hop concert. These artists represent the underground, Williamsburg, live music scene vibe, so prepare yourself for an eargasm. I’m even more excited because my homies E.Z. Mo Breezy, the cats that bring you the widely popular NYC down South party ““Grits & Biscuits,” will be spinning on Sunday. So you know it’s going to be a good time.
There’s plenty to do at the fest, like a thrift market for bargain spenders looking for those artsy, one-of-a-kind finds, food trucks with BBQ, pizza, icecream and Jamaican food (YES!!), and hopefully someone will be selling nutcrackers outside the park. #IJS
What makes me real geeked about this festival is there is also the Nike Battle for the Streets, a street skate competition, Brooklyn Rhapsody, a best bike show, and an artwall for artists to showcase their talent. All this at a music festival…for FREE!
The event starts at noon each day and its at Commodore Barry Park in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, Nassau St. between Navy St. and N. Elliot Place. You’d def want to check out the site to view the schedule for both days to see what day and time your favorite band will be rocking the stage. See you out there!!
