I saw on Facebook a friend promoting a newly-opened small business here in Brooklyn called Mac Shack. This goes everything against my healthy eating habits, but I have been going on a bad eating binge lately so I figured, why not. The restaurant is small, more set up for take out, with a waiting bench and one table with two chairs to dine in if you can’t wait to get home to indulge.
As I looked at menu, I was amazed by how many options they had. With 13 choices, from ground beef, shrimp, jerk chicken to duck, there is something for everyone. There’s even a veggie option for the health conscious eaters. However, with the amount of cheese in that bowl there’s not enough carrots and broccolli they can put in there that could negate the high-calorie mac and cheese combo you’re ingesting. You’ll just have to accept the fact when you go to Mac Shack, you are going there to do your tummy good in a naughty way. I had the pesto chicken and my friend had the shrimp. It’s a good serving for the price ($7-$10 depending on the entree) and I could only eat half and saved the rest.
The location is ideal because it’s in the bustling Fort Greene neighborhood and a good alternative to the other dining options in the area. I really can’t think of anywhere else to get a good plate of mac and cheese in Brooklyn and that is considered a comfort food, so I think the founders struck Kraft cheese gold with this idea. With it being a few blocks from Barclays Center, they may be filling up that empty yellow wall space with photos of celebrity customers in the upcoming NBA season. Next time I go back, (this weekend) I am going to get the Alfredo Mac filled with turkey bacon, green peas and parsley. I’m excited thinking about it already. What’s your favorite on the menu?
