Beats, Rhymes & Likes

With our latest edition of Inside The Mine, we shift  focus to the producer.  Being that we’re just one month away from the release of Phazed Out, it seemed fitting to reach out to Mr. M-Phazes…good gracious himself and get his take on what he felt were the top ten produced tracks of this past year.  Agree or disagree…feel free to add your add your .02 cents – what were your top beats of ’11?  [comment below]

Common – “Blue Sky” (prod. by No I.D.)

I’ve always been a fan of No I.D., him and Common are a great team!  This beat is so sick for the fact there’s no snare, it’s crazy but it works, and it’s such an uplifting track, the shit thumps and Common sounds perfect on it!

Game feat. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg – “Drug Test” (prod. by Khalil & Dr. Dre)

Khalil owned shit last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.  He pretty much brought that raw hip-hop sound back to the radio. This track was slept on as hell, but the beat is amazing – it has a bounce to it, you can’t help but nod your head furiously to this.

Kendrick Lamar – “ADHD” (prod. by Sounwave)

This track is amazing, I’m a huge Kendrick fan and this sort of music suits him to a “t”!  It’s gritty as hell, but smooth at the same time, and I love the filtered drums and the big reverb snare that brings in the hook…sounds like its run from a shitty old tape deck.

Tyler The Creator – “Yonkers” (prod. by Tyler The Creator)

Not a huge Odd Future fan, but I’m a sucker for a beat like this…it’s on some 90’s Wu-Tang shit.

Janye Zest – “Murder To Excellence” [excellence part] (prod. by S1)

S1 is a monster, I’ve been lucky enough to collab with him recently on some tracks.  This song is a perfect combination of traditional hip-hop fused with that big clean mainstream sound and its so musical! Ye and Jay ride the track well!

DJ Quik – “Fire and Brimstone” (prod. by DJ Quik)

I’m a Quik groupie (pause), fuck it I’ll admit it.  The dude is one of my main influences.  This shit is different to anything that was coming out at the time, makes you want to smack the shit out of someone.

Drake – “Lord Knows” (prod. by Just Blaze)

What can I say? Just blaze is the fuckin man!

Pharoahe Monch (feat. Styles P & Phonte) – “Black Hand Side” (prod. by Mike Loe)

Simple beat, dope sample, hard drums, very dope! Sucks that i found the sample like 2 weeks after hearing song! Hate when that happens!  Styles P and Monch should do an album!

Lil B – “I’m God” (prod. by Clams Casino)

Hate this clown [Lil B], love this beat.

Lupe Fiasco – “All Black Everything” (prod. by Wizzo Buchanan)

Perfect beat for Lupe, drums knock so hard and the sample evokes lots of emotion.
