Here is my top 10 singles of 2011 in no specific order. I was thinking about doing a top 20 but I would ended up with like 8 songs that have a combination of all the usual suspects so it would kinda be a boring read. Honorable Mention to Uncle Murda’s “Warning“, the only song to “smack the shit” out of anybody on the radio this year.
Kendrick Lamar – “Rigamortis” (prod. by Willie B)
If you were your going to argue who was the best rapper in 2011 and could go only on the strength of one song this would win hands down. Advanced calculus rap made enjoyable for everybody.
Mr. Motherfuckin’ eXquire- “Huzzah” (prod. by Necro)
If there is such a thing as an “underground hit” this is it. The remix was great too and if I was gonna get all hip to the hopped-out and do a top ten verses of the year I would put El-P’s verse somewhere in there, probably at number four.
Meek Mill feat. Rick Ross – “I’m A Boss” (Jahlil Beats)
Meek Mill held it down this year for people who like to yell in the microphone. Not someone I was personally checking for but between “Tupac Back” , “House Party” and this record I ended up downloading Dream Chasers which is actually not too bad.
Big Sean feat. Nicki Minaj – “A$$ (Remix)” (prod. by Da Internz)
Just watch the video… [click here]
A$AP Rocky- “Peso” (prod. by ASAP Ty Beats)
The handsome fellow from Harlem brought his A$AP crew to people not on the internet this summer with a track produced by a seventeen year old that makes me re-evaluate what i’m doing with my life.
Future feat. Drake – “Tony Montana” (prod. by Lex Luger)
Showing you don’t really need to use vowels to rap when you have an incredibly original concept to work with.
Azealia Banks (feat. Lazy Jay) – “212”
A cute chick with with sassy raps over acid house production so naturally the “tastemaker” sites go crazy over it….and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Random Axe feat. Roc Marciano – “Chewbacca” (prod. by Black Milk)
For those still fighting the good fight, this was the song of the year and it’s beat inspired as many freestyle’s as “Yonkers” or “…In Paris”.
French Montana – “Shot Caller” (prod. by Harry Fraud)
If you live in New York and have not heard this record then you don’t live in New York. French is one of the last rappers to have an actual “street buzz” proving once again that people not on the internet also listen to music.
Janye Zest- “Dudes In Paris”
“Can’t knock the hustle” has no business being a factor when it come to critiquing music but people paid a couple hundred dollars to see them perform this song seven times in a row so I guess it should be on this list. Me personally I haven’t referred to anything as “cray” this year. You really don’t need to hear this again. Check this out instead.
