As the month of borough hubris continues leading up to the first concert at the Barclays Center starring hometown hero Jay-Z, we figured we’d give you a musical soundtrack to match your enthusiasm.
Senior editor for Hip Hop Wired, Kazeem Famuyide (@reallifekaz), created a well-thought out list of the 25 Greatest Brooklyn Anthems Ever. The list has familiar songs we heard on the radio growing up, but some of these anthems representing Brooklyn’s roughness and criminal tendencies like “Brooklyn Took It” from Jeru the Damaja and “Coney Island” from Marco Polo and Torae, that you had to go to mixtapes to hear these gutter tracks.
Ranging from Jay-Z and Biggie classics, to old school tracks from The Beastie Boys and Big Daddy Kane, to hot joints from female MC’s Lil’ Kim and MC Lyte, the list is definitely one of those you wanna bump to with the windows all the way down (with the heat blowing on your feet because you know it’s cold outside) riding through Brownsville or East Flatbush or even scaring the hipsters in Williamsburg.
As the anticipation builds to the first of games and performances at the Barclays Center, we encourage you to listen, learn and press repeat for these tracks and put your friends on to this list as well. After all, spreading love is the Brooklyn way!!
