The end of the year is increasingly becoming a bad time to put out music. Most of the interwebsiteblogs are focused on their year-end lists and since record stores have become a thing of the past, there’s no major commercial release for people to pick up when they’re out at the mall. So with that being said, here’s five noteworthy free releases you may have missed in all the year end madness.
The Weeknd- House Of Echoes
The final chapter in the R&B wunderkind’s trilogy. At it’s best, it’s some futuristic, lust & drug induced soul…and at it’s worst, he sounds like the singer performing at weddings in Will Ferrel movies.
Smoke DZA- Sweet Baby Kushed God EP
Some people really into DZA others not so much – but the EP features A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Flying Lotus, and Lex Luger….and everybody likes them.
Raekwon- Unexpected Victory
After not creating the same hype with his latest album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang as he did with OBFCL2, The Chef makes up for it with this mixtape/free album with features and production from Scram Jones, 9th Wonder, CL Smooth, Sauce Money, Mobb Deep, Busta Rhymes, Styles P, CNN, Vado, JD Era, LEP Bogus Boys, Fred Da Godson, Moss, Santa, Tim Tebow, Yao Ming, David Blaine, Regis Philbin, and Father Guido Sarducci. Unexpected guest appearances indeed.
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire – Merry eX-Mas & Suck My Dick
Kind of a Christmas present depending on which blog you went to: some had it for free download, some sent you to his bandcamp page and wanted $5. Weren’t people killing Lil’ Kim for charging for a mixtape? Anyways, not as good as Lost In Translation but still a solid release (free or $5).
Yo Gotti – January 10th
The mixtape is called ‘January 10th’, which is the date of his his “debut” album Live From The Kitchen (to clear up any confusion). I’ve been busy and haven’t had a chance to go through the entire project, but the song “Got Dem Racks” is crazy, so you should download the project off the strength of that..
